Diwali festivities begin in United Kingdom's London and Leicester
In Leicester and London of United Kingdom, the Indian-British community have started the week-long Diwali festival. Several thousand Hindus have already geared up for the Diwali Day celebrations in Leicester featuring hundreds of public fireworks, street art shows and live entertainment programmes along with special prayers in temples.

In Leicester, Diwali festivities are the biggest celebrations outside India as it has a sizable Asian population.

This year's Diwali celebrations kicked off in Leicester with the 'Diwali Switch On' event at the Golden Mile, Belgrave Road known for its Indian and Gujarati restaurants, shops and jewellery showrooms. It is said that around 40,000 people turned out to watch the ceremony marked by a programme of music, dance and fireworks display. For children, there were funfair rides. The food stalls set up there did brisk business.

Also, a religious event was held at Harmony House in Leicester to begin Diwali festivities with the theme 'Re-Ignite the Light Within' by the Brahma Kumaris that also holds regular free courses in positive thinking, self esteem, overcoming anger, women's empowerment, Raja Yoga and meditation.

In London, Diwali celebration began on Trafalgar Square from Sunday, October 12, with the popular theme of the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil, it is learned.

The 'Diwali in London Committee' has invited Hindus, Jains and Sikhs to Trafalgar Square for the annual celebration of Diwali, the festival of lights to be celebrated with cultural performances, music, dances, worship, kirtan and grand aarati.

It was reported that on October 15, around 35,000 gathered at the Trafalgar Square in central London for 16th edition of collective public celebration of Diwali festival.
