International Mountain Day is being celebrated with theme "Mountains Matter" this year
International Mountain Day (IMD), 11th December, is celebrated across the world with the theme "Mountains Matter".

Proclaimed by the United Nations and coordinated by it agency the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), a number of events are organised in various countries and major cities of the world  to afford opportunities to get familiar with magnificent  mountains, rain concern for their preservation and appreciate blessings of benevolent from mountains.

The observance coordination agency informs that the IMD-2018 will be an occasion to create a large social movement that can bring mountain issues on the tables of politicians.

"Through a global campaign, a social media strategy and events around the world, FAO plans to tell the world that the current neglect of mountains and mountain peoples must stop. We therefore ask everyone to use the hashtag #MountainsMatter in all their communications specifying why mountains matter for them," it adds.

According to FAO, mountains preserve fresh water sources; supply between 60-80% of the world's freshwater; reduce disaster events like landslides and avalanches, preserve biodiversity as well as agricultural diversity and safeguard indigenous mountain cultures.

"Almost one billion people live in mountain areas, and over half the human population depends on mountains for water, food and clean energy. Yet mountains are under threat from climate change, land degradation, over exploitation and natural disasters, with potentially far-reaching and devastating consequences, both for mountain communities and the rest of the world," informs FAO's website.
