Khalistan separatists on a revival mode worldwide
Khalistan supporters in West are trying to regroup the movement in India and all across the world. There have been clear attempts to resuscitate radical Sikh environment in Pakistan and also reorganising terror groups in the US, Canada and Germany
ALTHOUGH THE revival of separatist terrorism in Punjab appears to be remote but attempts are being made for a gradual resurrection of the Khalistan movement in India and all across the world, wherever this concept has sympathisers.

The reason for separatist revival are not far away, but these lie just across the border in Pakistan, which still has not reconciled to the abject failure of this movement. In addition, there is a large Sikh diaspora in America, United Kingdom, Canada and other parts of the world, which is sympathetic to the separatist cause.

Infact, the Indian government went on record saying that there have been clear attempts to resuscitate radical Sikh environment in Pakistan and also reorganising of the terror groups in the US, Canada and Germany.

While these terror groups have not been able to organise a major strike in Punjab but they have managed to send their message across, both, in the physical and cyber space. On the ground level, the Khalistan supporters have orchestrated bomb attacks sparingly in Punjab and Delhi, even as the separatist movement has built a very strong online presence on the Internet.

There have been regular seizures of arms and ammunition in Punjab, which points to a latent attempt to revive the terrorism in the state. The Dera Sacha Sauda issue is also being used by radicals to incite the people in the name of religion.

As per experts, at least 100 lives have been lost to radical violence from 1995 to 2005, a period of relative stability and peace, compared to past.

Khalistani separatists have established multimedia websites, user groups on social media websites and they run regular email campaigns to impress upon their ideology on the world.

Sites like Khalistan.com, Khalistan.net, Khalistan affairs and others are spreading the separatist ideology without any hindrance.

The Khalistan.com website describes the recent Council of Khalistan 21st annual convention as very successful:

“A press note Delegates came from Canada, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Yuba City, California, and many other locations to the Council of Khalistan’s 21st annual convention, which was held on October 11-12, 2008, at Gurdwara Sahib Fremont in Fremont, California.

Delegates presented their views on how to achieve Khalistan and expedite its liberation. Many resolutions were passed, including resolutions in support of a sovereign, independent Khalistan, condemning the establishment of Deras by fake gurus and other resolutions. “These Deras are a danger to the Sikh religion,” said Dr Gurmit Singh Aulakh, president of the Council of Khalistan.

While the Khalistan supporters in West are trying to regroup and reinvigorate the movement, the real danger comes from Pakistan, where terrorists harboured by the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) are trying to repeat what they had done in Punjab during the terror years.

The Khalistani terror groups are actively working with Islamic groups in Pakistan to pursue their agenda of death and destruction.

Despite the resurgence of this threat and acceptance by a senior Indian government functionary that Khalistan poses a potent threat, the establishment remains in a limbo. It is high time that central intelligence agencies and the police forces formulate a strategy to nip this threat in the bud.

This battle has to be multi-pronged and need to be fought both on the ground and also in the cyber space. However, it needs to be seen whether India has necessary strategic vision to negate this threat or else the state of Punjab as well as the entire country will burn again.
