A recent research has revealed that children between the age group of 3 to 7 years who do not get enough sleep are increasingly prone to problems related to attention span, emotional control and social relationships with their peers.
The study which involved more than a thousand children was conducted at the MassGeneral Hospital for Children, U.S. The researchers interviewed the mothers regarding the sleeping patterns of their children in their early formative years.
The study published online in the 'Academic Paediatrics' journal recommends that children between the age group 3-7 years must sleep timely for adequate number of hours and more so during the weekends to boost cognitive functions of the brain. The study has put the 'adequate sleeping hours' for these children between a range of 10 to 12 hours.
"The study has serious implications both for parents and teachers teaching at pre-primary and early-primary levels to keep children physically and cognitively engaged through more of multi-sensory and activities with socialisation enough so that they are able to sleep well," said Jaipur-based educator Prabha Kishore.
Kishore also suggested that the learning and use of pacifiers should be avoided. This also includes not letting the children use smart-phones till the age of 11 years. Moreover, the nuclear families and single parents are taking a toll on the social development of kids. Kishore also warned about the increasing number of children who have learning difficulties and marked wrong parenting and early primary education ill-practices as the reason behind this.
