Ravi Shastri appointed as head coach of Indian cricket team till World Cup 2019
On Tuesday, the Cricket Advisory Committee named former Indian all-rounder Ravi Shastri as the next head coach the Indian national cricket team. He shall be at the helm of affairs till the ICC World Cup 2019.

Along with Shastri, while former Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan was named as the bowling coach, Rahul Dravid was appointed as the batting consultant for specific overseas tours.

On Monday after interviewing five candidates, the Cricket Advisory Committee, whose membered by Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman, had announced that the name of the coach shall be declared after Virat Kohli returns from America.

However, the BCCI Committee of Administrators directed the committee to consult Kohli and announce the name at the earliest. An email from BCCI at 11 pm on Tuesday confirmed the appointments.

The five candidates interviewed by CAC were – Virender Sehwag, Ravi Shastri, Tom Moody, Richard Pybus, and Lalchand Rajput. Former West Indian coach Phil Simmons, however, could not attend the interview.

Ganguly and VVS Laxman sitting at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai were joined by Sachin Tendulkar through video conferencing from the UK. Surprisingly, except for Sehwag, who was physically present at the BCCI headquarter for the interview, rest of the probables were interviewed over Skype.

A BCCI official was quoted by News18 as saying, "The CAC was indeed impressed by Ravi Shastri's presentation and it was then decided that Kohli should be brought into the scene and the skipper should make the call because at the end of the day, it is the captain who will have to spend time with the coach and the equation cannot be compromised."

Shastri who assumed the role of the Team Director between 2014 and 2016, had lost out to Anil Kumble last year for the position of head coach. However, after Kumble resigned at the end of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, the post was vacated.

55-year-old Shastri would be linking with the Indian team before it departs for the Sri Lanka tour. The team will play 3 Tests, five ODIs and one T20I during the tour. The first Test between India and Sri Lanka starts at Galle on July 26.
