Spirituality's take on suicide: Individuals with low spiritual quotient more likely to commit suicide
These days many educators, development theorists, psychologists and spiritualists are emphasising the development of spiritual intelligence of children through their upbringing and educational practices. The term was first coined by Danah Zohar in 1997 which was also used by another author Ken O'Donnell.

However, the term got popularised through Zohar's book 'Re-Wiring the Corporate Brain'.

Howard Gardner, the profounder of the theory of multiple intelligences, suggested an "existential intelligence" as viable to be included in psychological and educational studies. Some studies indicate that individual with higher spiritual quotient tend to be at peace with life.

If we go by the spirituality, life is seen as a quest to search the meaning of life with an aim for acquiring higher levels of consciousness while suicide is a loss of meaning of life for an individual who sees life in terms of materialistic gains and sensual gratifications. Studies have proved those who are high on spiritual quotient hardly commit suicide.

In the spiritual side of every religion, human life is deemed as a divine gift and individual is held responsible for how he or she uses it. In most religions, there is an emphasis on development of an individual's autonomous self. Those who pursue spiritual, for them life is held sacred and taking one's own life is forbidden completely. Even Islamic Sufism also believes in spiritualistic aspect of life and devotion to the almighty by singing his praises.

According to Sally O'Brien, the fundamentalists and extremists have a much stronger concept of themselves as a group, with less emphasis on the autonomous self, they even subscribe for suicide bombing. For the suicide bombers, the meaning of their death by blowing themselves up to kill others is different – more of conditioned brainwash.

Spirituality believes in loving oneself and all others alike and not to commit any harm to self and other. Likening suicide to extreme hatred Woodrow Li says, "Suicide is nearly always the last act of hatred a person makes. It is not deep depression or pain that results in suicide, it is a desire for revenge that is the final reason...That is what is wrong with suicide, it is not a release, and it is the succumbing to hatred. It is not the winning of control over life, it is losing to bitterness and letting hatred become all encompassing."

According to spiritualists, suicide is the outcome of materialistic and faulty perception or interpretation of life, world and success that determine a person's actions including suicide.
