True guru is role model of divine life
On the occasion of Guru Purnima on July 16, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, greeted the people saying, "On the auspicious day of Guru Purnima, we bow in reverence to all our Gurus who have played an important role in inspiring, moulding and shaping our society."

To remember my teachers, I did a blog on speakingtree, which goes as follows:

An able Guru - Master - is centered in own Self to work as an example or role model of divine life. He or she facilitates the seeker to embark a journey by sharing knowledge about true self and ultimate purpose of human existence.

One attains Gurudom by realizing the self and acquiring a state of equanimity and tranquillity. He awakens the quest for quest for a divine life to be acquired by self-knowledge.

In other words, Guru guides or directs your inward journey and sets you free to follow the path of self-realisation on your own.
