German kayaker Birgit Fischer has won eight gold medals over six different Olympic Games, from 1980 Moscow Olympic to 2004 Athens Olympic. She represented East Germany in three Olympic and then four times representing the reunited Germany. Birgit Fischer has been both the youngest- and oldest-ever Olympic canoeing champion. She won her first gold in 1980 Moscow Olympic at the age of 18 in K-1 500 m. In 1988 Seoul Olympic she won 2 gold in K-2 500 m and K-4 500 m. In 1992 Barcelona Olympic she won her fourth Olympic gold in K-1 500, whereas in 1996 Atlanta Olympic and in 2000 Sydney Olympic she won 2 gold in K-4 500 and one in K-2 500. In 2004 Athens Olympic she won her eight gold in Olympic at the age of 42. In 2004 she was voted German sportswoman of the year.
