In one of the most tragic hospital accidents, 93 people lost their lives in a fire incident at the AMRI Hospitals at Dhakuria in Kolkata on December 9. The fire, which started early in the morning at around 3.30 am, spread from the basement of the AMRI hospital, where highly inflammable material was allegedly stored. When the fire began there were 160 people inside the AMRI hospital in south Kolkata. In the fire tragedy 93 people died including some hospital staff. In 1996, the 190-bed AMRI Hospitals was co-founded by Emami & Shrachi Groups. Six directors of AMRI Hospital were arrested and charged with culpable homicide. The chief minister of the state Mamata Banerjee ordered a judicial probe into the tragedy.
