India's largest power company, NTPC was set up in 1975 to accelerate power development in India. NTPC is the largest power generating major in the country. It has also diversified into hydro power, coal mining, power equipment manufacturing, oil & gas exploration, power trading & distribution. With a current generating capacity of 36,014 MW, NTPC is the India's sixth biggest public company by market capitalisation and one of the five Maharatna status companies of India. NTPC ranked 348 in the Forbes Global 2000 ranking of the World’s biggest companies. According to Forbes its total assets is $28.75 billion, whereas market value is $31.81 billion as of March 2011.
