The Uljin Nuclear Power Plant surrounded with walls to protect it against 10-meter tsunamis, is located in the Gyeongsangbuk-do province on the east coast of South Korea. The plant's six nuclear reactors have been built between 1988 to 2005. All these reactors are of the Pressurized water reactor (PWR) reactor type and the facility runs at an installed capacity of 5,881 MW. There is one 942 MW unit, one 945 MW unit, one 994 MW unit, one 998 MW unit, and two 1,001 MW units. The South Korean government announced plans to spend $922 million over five years on safety upgrades and wants to nearly double its generation of electricity from nuclear energy by 2030.
